The City of Hendersonville’s water treatment plant sits at 4139 Haywood Road, inside the Town of Mills River, drawing from two gravity-fed intakes on the North Fork of the Mills River and Bradley Creek in Pisgah National Forest, an intake on the main stem of the Mills River, and, since the French Broad River intake and filter expansion were finished in December 2025, the French Broad, with the plant now permitted for 15 million gallons a day. That water goes to more than 32,000 meters around the county. Most Mills River homes are not among them.
The Town of Mills River says plainly that it does not provide water or sewer; it points residents to Hendersonville and Asheville water and to MSD sewer where lines run, and those lines follow the highway corridors. Off them, on the farm roads up the river valleys and the slopes toward the national forest, homes are on wells drilled into the Blue Ridge gneiss and granite.
The good news is that Mills River has some of the better well ground in the county.
