What Henderson County water is like

Testing: what to order
Bacteria, $50 at the county. Total coliform and E. coli. Order it after any pump work that opened the well, after brown water following rain, once a year as a habit, and before buying a house on a well. Henderson County requires it on every new well within 30 days of completion; the state requires a bacteria and chemical test on all new wells.
pH, iron, manganese, hardness. The stain panel. This is what decides between a neutralizer, an iron filter, or both, and it is the test to run before anyone quotes treatment.
Nitrate, $50. Worth running on farm land and old orchard ground.

Treatment, priced honestly
Acid neutralizer, $1,200 to $2,500. A tank of calcite through which the water flows, dissolving a little marble to raise the pH toward 7. Backwashing models clean themselves; simpler upflow models cost less. The calcite gets topped up yearly. It adds a little hardness, which is why a softener sometimes follows. This is the most common treatment we install in Henderson County because it addresses the most common problem, and it protects every copper joint, water heater, and brass fitting downstream.
Iron and manganese filters. Oxidizing media filters that convert dissolved iron to particles and catch them, backwashing periodically. Sized to the tested iron level and the household flow. On many wells a neutralizer alone reduces iron staining because iron stays dissolved in acidic water and precipitates once the pH rises.
UV disinfection, $800 to $1,800. A lamp that kills bacteria as water passes. It is the answer for a well that keeps testing positive after the cap and casing are fixed and the well has been chlorinated. It needs clear water, so a sediment filter goes ahead of it, and the lamp is replaced yearly.
Water softener. Less needed here than in limestone country, but useful after a neutralizer or on the harder wells along the French Broad valley.

Shock chlorination. Not a system but a service: a measured dose of chlorine down the well, circulated through the plumbing, held, and flushed. Done after any pump work (the state requires it), after a positive bacteria test, and for sulfur odor.
The well itself is the first treatment
Before any filter, the well has to be sound. State rules require the casing to stand at least 12 inches above the ground and to be grouted at least 20 feet down, and they set the well 100 feet from the septic drainfield and 25 feet from the house. A casing buried by landscaping, a cracked or missing cap, or a casing rusted through at grade lets surface water carry bacteria straight in, and no filter fixes that for long.
